About

  • Why learning and technology?

Your ability to learn & use technology is fundamental to success.

Aims and goals are to help you learn about technology in all its forms.  Understanding & application, tricks & tips are some ways we'll explore this idea at TechLearn.  In addition to a technology focus, there will be sessions helping you explore new ideas on learning.  Techlearn's end goal is to encourage you towards your own continuous learning effort.  What does that mean?  What are the reasons? Can learning be professional and personal and enjoyable at the same time?  TechLearn is about coming with questions and leaving with answers (and more questions!)

  • For what reason?

The future of how you succeed professionally will be your willingness to engage in your personal/professional learning. Our current economic environment requires that learning becomes central to our ability to thrive in harsh times.

In many industries and professions, the rising trend is an ever decreasing availability of formalized professional learning requirements.  Research, and this area is growing, shows that the onus of responsibility must be on the learner for learning efforts to be valuable.  Further, employers are recognizing that the "informal learning" -the what happens when people are not directed in their efforts- is much more powerful than creating and forcing employees to stay relevant, knowledgeable, and sharp.  Employers in the future will offer many learning channels, events, and methods.

In this not-too-distant future, you will provide evidence of your capabilities to use what you have learned on-the-job.  No longer will employers count hours or require certificates as the only measure.  We see the rise of systems that evaluate what skills you possess to obtain, say, a raise in salary commensurate with abilities –and much less tied to time employed.  Having a better understanding, skills and abilities to enjoy learning will only help you as this future becomes more prevalent. Learning is moving beyond education.

  • Who should attend?

TechLearn isn’t so much about education. It's about learning, freely. We provide the topics, you make the connections.  The presenters have been asked to engage you. We hope learning becomes a constant pursuit.  If it leads to you becoming a better Librarian, Frontline Staffer, IT Professional, Mom, Friend, or Agent for Change -that's fine.
